Brodick – bringing the bling

During my final couple of years at NTS I spent a lot of time on Arran with the staff of Brodick Castle and Country Park, as well as with archaeologists, curators and managers to advise on a major project to upgrade the visitor experience at the site. The planning work spanned a number of years, different teams and changes of staff. I was glad that I had commissioned visitor studies research as this gave us a sound base of evidence to work with, and helped prioritise our thinking.

The plan included options for introductory exhibition areas, opening up a medieval castle experience (informed by the latest archaeological findings), increasing opportunities for visitors to view red squirrels, and finding ways to celebrate the collections (of silver in particular) which are of a world-class standard. I was also keen to develop a more character-led approach to telling the castle’s stories.
